It’s been over a year since the Royal Wedding occurred and Prince William is just now talking about the complications with the wedding preparation, including his trouble getting to sleep the night before.
You’d think that nothing could go wrong when millions have been spent on the wedding of the century, but every wedding has its glitches. Prince William and Kate Middleton experienced this first hand.
To start off the big day, or I guess in preparation for the big day, Prince William had to battle nerves and a giant, over excited crowd outside the Clarence House in order to get some sleep. In the upcoming UK television special Elizabeth: Queen, Wife and Mother, he expresses, “I hadn’t slept at all that night because obviously all the crowds were [outside]. They were singing and cheering all night long. So, the excitement of that, the nervousness of me, and everyone singing meant I slept for about half an hour, I think.”
Poor Will. It probably didn’t help when the next day he had to deal with an over-sized guest list on top of the usual wedding day jitters. “There was very much a subdued moment when I was handed a list with 777 names on it — not one person I knew or Catherine knew,” he said. “I went to [my grandmother] and said, ‘Listen, I’ve got this list, not one person I know — what do I do?’ And she went, ‘Get rid of it. Start from your friends and then we’ll add those we need to in due course. It’s your day.'”
As if that weren’t enough, the Prince was also worried about the traditional Irish Guards uniform he was wearing. “The hardest thing was trying to walk down the stairs with my spurs on, sideways,” he said (spurs being the metal spike attached to the heel of a rider’s boot). “I had visions of myself and my brother colliding and crashing down the stairs.”
But at the end of the day, I’m sure we can all agree that the fairy tale wedding went beautifully. William himself even called it “really good fun.”
