Mariah Carey could be the next judge on American Idol. The multi-platinum singer is reportedly being eyed for the judges’ table that has been hit with the high profile departures of Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.
“She’s in play,” a source told People. “They are in serious talks.”
If Carey joins the Idol family, she will be part of a depleted roster that now includes original judge Randy Jackson and producer/host Ryan Seacrest. In 2009, American Idol favorite Paula Abdul was let go from the program and popular judge Simon Cowell left the show in 2010.
Today, after waffling about her decision, Jennifer Lopez called it quits.
“I honestly feel the time has come to get back to do what I do,” J.Lo said. “I have put it on hold because I love Idol so much. You have a lot of other responsibilities and other things you want to do.”
Aside from the Idol speculation, Mariah is tuning up for a new album. Producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins announced on Twitter that he was recording new music with the Grammy winning songtress.
“In the studio experiencing 1 of those magical moments, where I’m hearing an absolutely amazing voice being sang to one my tracks. #GREATNESS,” Jerkins tweeted of the session with Carey. Jermaine Dupri, Bryan-Michael Cox, Johnta Austin, and Idol judge Randy Jackson are also rumored to be a part of the upcoming project. —Keith Murphy, CBS Local
