Hilary Duff and her new boyfriend, Jason Walsh, caused quite the controversy when they made their first appearance as a couple at a Halloween party on Friday. People weren’t talking about their relationship, but of their offensive costumes. They were being called out for cultural appropriation, with comments like, “look how much work dude put into being racist.”
Yahoo reports that Duff was wearing a sexy pilgrim costume, while Walsh dressed like a Native American chief. People took to social media to voice their concerns, saying the couple was “insensitive and ignorant.” The anger also came from the fact that thousands are currently protesting construction that would destroy the sacred land of Native Americans in North Dakota.

Just last year, Chris Hemsworth was seen dressed as a Native American on Halloween, similar to Duff and Walsh, but he wrote an apology for being insensitive. He ended his apology by saying, “I hope that in highlighting my own ignorance I can help in some small way.” Duff has not yet responded to the costumes.
