Do you have bagged lettuce laying around in your kitchen? A new study came out suggesting the potential dangers of eating it. Delish reports that researchers at the University of Leicester in England found that “juices released from the broken leaves of lettuce, spinach, and other greens increase the risk of the bacteria salmonella 2,400-fold.” The juices also make it easier for salmonella to cause infection. And once a bag has been opened, there is a greater risk.
Their press statement says “These juices also helped the salmonella to attach itself to the salad leaves so strongly that vigorous washing could not remove the bacteria, and even enabled the pathogen to attach to the salad bag container.” They suggest looking out for recalls on greens and consuming bagged lettuce immediately instead of waiting it out.
