This morning it was announced that Tilikum, the orca, or killer whale, at the center of the popular documentary Blackfish has died. Sea World has announced the end of it’s Orca breeding program, meaning that after the current whale’s at Sea World die, the orca program will come to an end.
One step in Sea World’s phasing out of the killer whale program is ending animal shows, which begins this weekend in San Diego. BBC reports that “SeaWorld also has killer whale shows at two other parks in America, in Texas and Florida and they will are scheduled to stop in 2019.
Instead of performing in shows the whales will now be part of an exhibit which aims to teach people more about the life of the whales. It’s all come about after SeaWorld faced lots of criticism from people who say keeping the whales in captivity is cruel and unnecessary.”
