Could Nutella Cause Cancer?

Some not good news for 2017…

The Huffington Post reported that a European Food Safety Authority released a study that palm oil, an essential ingredient in nutella, is linked to an aggressive spread of cancer in mice. Food companies in Italy have already begun to boycott the oil along with several supermarkets who are removing palm oil from their shelves.

The company who makes Nutella, Ferrero, has no plans on changing out the harmful ingredient.

“Making Nutella without palm oil would produce an inferior substitute for the real product, it would be a step backward,” said Ferrero Top Executive, Vincenzo Tapella.

Ferrero uses aboout 185,000 TONS of palm oil a year, so switching ingredients would not be a walk in the park… Palm oil is also one of the cheapest oils so it would also be quite costly to the company.

Although the Food Safety Authority has some concerns about the ingredient, the level of risk is also unclear.

So, will you still be purchasing this delicious (and potentially dangerous) chocolate-hazelnut spread?
