It’s a sad day for gamers everywhere.
According to Billboard, Masaya Nakamura passed away at 91. Nakamura was well known for founding the company Namco, which produced the classic arcade title Pac-Man.
Namco, which became Bandai Namco in 2005 after a company merger, had humble beginnings but went on to dominate in the arcade-scene of the 70s and 80s, and also had success with amusement parks.
The character of Pac Man was designed by Namco engineer Toru Iwatani, and the game went on sale in 1980. Pac-Man was later declared by Guinness World Record to be the most successful coin-operated game in the world, being played an estimated 10 billion times.
While Bandai Namco has confirmed Nakamura’s death, they have refused to comment on any further personal details in respect of the family.
