Although it still feels like the Rio Summer Olympics have just barely passed by, Tokyo is already preparing for it’s the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
According to Yahoo! News, Tokyo Olympic organizers have begun asking the Japanese public to donate any old smartphones and other old electronic devices in order to make the official medals out of them.
The goal of the collection is acquire eight tonnes of gold, silver, and bronze from the recycling bins in order to create the 5000 medals needed for both the Olympic and Paralympic games.
While partially to help promote an environmentally conscious feel to the coming games, the main goal is to drive down costs for the event as the total price estimate for the games has risen to $30 billion (in comparison, the London Summer Olympics only cost about $11 billion).
