Frozen took the world by storm when it came out in 2013. The two sisters were added to the list of Disney Princesses, and they’ve become an iconic duo. It wasn’t originally supposed to be that way.
According to Daily Mail, Elsa was originally going to be the villain. As far as the original story went, Elsa was an evil queen who took control of the kingdom of Arendelle after being stood up by Prince Hans on her wedding day. Elsa would send hordes of snow monsters against the kingdom, with Anna and Kristoff fighting their way to the top of the mountain.
Prince Hans, meanwhile, starts an avalanche to stop all the monsters, knowing that Anna and Kristoff would be crushed. Anna persuades Elsa to use her powers to save the kingdom when all this happens, and the story ends.
So why the change?
The team working on Frozen said the ending didn’t feel satisfying enough. Producer Peter Del Vecho said, “We had no emotional connection to Elsa — we didn’t care about her because she had spent the whole movie being the villain. We weren’t drawn in. The characters weren’t relatable.”
So the team went in a different direction, showing Elsa’s struggles of having to hide her powers to be seen as “normal.” The team is glad they changed directions.
