With the stir around 13 Reasons Why’s subject content hitting the news and even school districts in Maryland and Ohio, Netflix has added a new warning before each episodes and an extended warning before the first.
The 13-episode Netflix drama based on Jay Asher’s book of the same name tackles serious topics such as sexual assault and suicide. The subject matter that the show presents has garnered extreme feedback.
New Zealand responded first by creating a special rating for the show four days ago, prohibiting anyone under the age of 18 to watch the show without adult supervision.
Netflix has since upped the ante by adding the additional warning worldwide, releasing a statement on the controversial matter:
“There has been a tremendous amount of discussion about our series 13 Reasons Why. While many of our members find the show to be a valuable driver for starting important conversation with their families, we have also heard concern from those who feel the series should carry additional advisories.”
In addition, Netflix has added a 30-minute special concluding the series titled 13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons. The special feature provides resources and helpful information for anyone who feels like they might need help.
