AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — One of the nation’s oldest veterans has been celebrated by his Texas hometown on his 111th birthday. Imagine how much history you could learn from him!
The mayor of Austin, Steve Adler gave Richard Overton his own day as well as his own street, where he’s been living for the past 45 years. The street is named “Richard Overton Avenue”
In his interview, Richard says the key to him being alive for 111 years is his cigars and drinking whiskey.
While in the army he worked very hard during World War II. Overton has witnessed Pearl Harbor, and fought during the Japanese Attack during the time.
Just four years ago, he was honored by President Obama for his work in the military.
Cheers to whiskey and cigars
