While most of us probably celebrated the 4th of July near a body of water, thousands hit the slopes to take advantage of snow at two Northern California ski resorts! Squaw Valley and Mammoth Mountain are STILL open for skiing after record snowfall in the Sierra. And, with more of a summer forecast, people were skiing and snowboarding in t’shirts and shorts!
Mammoth says it’s committed to being open until August, at least as long as the snow pack holds up, which could be a record. Back in the winter season of 1994 to 1995 they stayed open until Aug. 13. As for Squaw Valley, they could break their record for the latest date of operation. The resort says this is the fourth time in its history they’ve been able to be open on the 4th of July and the first time EVER they will attempt to stay open after that. They say they’ll stay open as long as they have the snow pack.
