Growing up, we’re told not to use swear words, because it’s inappropriate and rude. And, if you ask my dad, makes you sound less intelligent. And, of course the stereotype is that people who swear are less educated.
But, according to a recent study, potty mouths might be a lot smarter than the stereotype! Lots of people, I’d argue who do not use swear words, or as they’re often called, sentence enhancers, only do it because they don’t have the vocabulary to express themselves intelligently, but two psychologists beg to differ. According to their findings, people who swear understand their general expressive content as well as nuanced distinctions that must be drawn to use slurs appropriately. The ability to make nuanced distinction indicates the presence of more rather than less linguistic knowledge.
And, yet another study found people who use swear words are more likely to be honest! So, to sum that up for those of you who don’t swear, people who do are honest and intelligent.
