Be careful where you go swimming in the American River.
According to the Sacramento Bee, the lower American River has been found to have levels of E. coli that exceed the federal threshold for safe, recreational use.
This means that people that swim in or accidentally drink the contaminated water could get sick, or even die. Thankfully, state regulators are not aware of anyone that has gotten sick with E. coli from the lower American River yet.
The increased level of the bacteria in the water may be due to homeless camps dumping waste into the waters, as well as regular animal waste.
